About Rachel - I was born in Surrey, so despite being in Scotland since starting my degree here in 2003, I will probably never lose the English accent. I came to Edinburgh to study glass at Edinburgh College of Art and graduated in 2007. I was awarded a scholarship from the Worshipful Company of Glaziers & Painters of Glass which enabled me to undertake work experience at a stained glass studio in Birmingham in 2008. This experience reinforced my desire to be working with glass full-time, but not necessarily to be undertaking designs or work that were not my own. I therefore returned to Edinburgh to formulate setting up my own studio and business.
The studio opened in January 2009 after a period of a few months physically building the space to be used as a glass studio. I started my own business to be able to make my own designs, in my own ways, within Scotland and completely by hand.
Being self employed - The best thing about being self employed is the complete lack of a "typical" day! It's also perhaps one of the biggest challenges to manage your tasks so that everything is completed, whether it's a desirable job or not. I try to get to the studio, which is about 20mins drive from my home, every day, even if it's just for a few hours of actual making, as any artist in business should tell you that more than half of your time is made up with administration tasks. Once at the studio, the range of items I produce varies to the extent that I could be doing anything from working on wax models for casting, to screen-printing sheets of glass with patterns and imagery ready to be fired and worked into jewellery. Sometimes, I even clean the place too!

Inspiration - I’m inspired by the intricate details of life and my work is essentially a representational comment on the world around me as well as a constant challenge to my technical abilities. There are very few glass disciplines I have not tried and I’ve even mastered a couple of them too!

I mostly work with kiln-formed glass, which essentially requires much planning and preparing of the glass, whether that is with molds or applying enamels, prior to placing it in the kiln and programming it to heat and cool the glass in a certain way. It can sometimes take weeks to prepare a firing, only to have the resulting work fail due to some unexpected problem I didn’t foresee, but it is this troubleshooting element that I relish and keeps me engaged with the material.

With Hindsight - I wouldn't have spent so much on equipment so soon, there are certain mistakes I have made through over exhuberant desires for kit, that have cost more money than they will earn any time soon.

Promotion - I don't know about effective, but I really enjoy the interaction of people on Facebook. I know it's not for everyone, but for me it's such a passive experience and so easy to update and view, that it suits my purposes.
Find Me - I sell online through my Etsy Shop and my vessels are available at Baffie. I also have stalls at local craft fairs in the Edinburgh area, details of which can be found on the News page of my website. My work also features in exhibitions throughout the UK, with details again on the News page or to be found on the studio Facebook page too.

Achievements - Still being in business is the biggest achievement and even that is never set in stone. As with any business producing luxury items, we are the first to suffer in a recession, but also, hopefully the first to be appreciated when people do look to spend their money again.

Goals - I am attending the British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate from the 3rd - 5th April and I'm hoping this will enable more wholesale business to develop over the year.
Ideal Day - Simply being in the studio, making the zany glass I want to make and being paid to do so! One day, maybe...
