Our ‘In the Shop Window’ interviews are light hearted get to know you pieces focusing on various businesses and talented artists who are a part of Shop Scotland. Find out how and why businesses began, hear their back stories and discover what people did prior to biting the bullet and becoming self employed. What drives them? What generates inspiration? A ‘typical day’ in business right down to where they eat out and what business advice they’d offer themselves with hindsight. This time round we’re excited to be shining the spotlight on Torrance jewellery designer Rosalind Morrison of Sweet Rosie.
Starting Out: As a child I always loved making things. My mum is very artistic and we would sit around the kitchen table threading daisy chain or making necklaces from melon seeds. I was forever taking things apart and making something new from them. I remember buying an old beaded car seat and making necklaces and bracelets to sell to friends and family for extra pocket money. I designed a ring for my 21st birthday and took it to a local jeweller to have it made. I told him I would love to learn to make ‘real’ jewellery and he pointed me in the right direction. Luckily for me the college were running a taster course the following week so I signed up and fell in love. After leaving college I went travelling fell into an office job on my return. After a period of redundancies I decided to start my business and not just make for friends and family. I haven’t looked back!
My Business: Based just outside Glasgow I work closely with clients to create their perfect piece of jewellery. I specialise in one-off pieces made from my customers old jewellery. Melting down the gold or silver and creating something new and wonderful. I also have a range of collections making beautiful jewellery available for everyone.
Business Name: I had a brainstorming session with my friends who I’ve known since school. They call me Rosie and I wanted my name to be used in some way. We were munching on sweet chilli crisps when my friend said what about Sweet Rosie and I loved it!
Previous jobs: I’ve had loads of jobs which has given me a good insight into dealing with all different personalities. Pubs, restaurants, office, newspapers I could go on. But this is my real passion.
“Typical” working day: I set myself a game plan for the day ahead. I always have a few jobs on at once so I really need to plan and prioritise. I’m forever getting last minute orders so sometimes my plans go awry but I try and stick to them as much as I can.
Self employment highs: Being your own boss, making the decisions and knowing they’ll get done.
Self employment lows: The boss is a slave driver!
Inspiration: It sounds corny but everywhere. My best ideas come when I’m drifting off to sleep so I always keep a notepad by my bed.
Business Achievements: Being asked to submit a design for this year’s Mobo Awards. Fingers crossed I get picked.
Longterm Goals: To have my own shop. My dream is to have a workshop attached to a cafe where folk can come for tea and cake while chatting about the piece they are looking for.
Popular and Favourite Products: My most popular product is my song lyric bracelet. Michelle Keegan has one and I’ve spotted her wearing it on the red carpet.
With Hindsight: Stop procrastinating and just go for it.
At Home: I love Soul Silver. She makes the most beautiful doll beads. I have bought for myself and for presents.
Celebrity Clients: Lorraine Kelly, Cat Harvey and Michelle Keegan all own Sweet Rosie bracelets.
In my Private Jet: Anywhere warm!
