Fife Beachcombers
Unique jewellery created with authentic, naturally tumbled Scottish sea glass and pottery shards
Location: Pittenweem
Year Founded: 2018
At Fife Beachcombers, we create truly unique jewellery using naturally tumbled sea glass and antique pottery shards that we have collected in the beautiful East Neuk of Fife. It can take decades, or even centuries, for sea glass to be formed by the sea into “jewel-like” shapes. We love that each piece holds its own story and history.
We never drill into the sea glass as we feel that would take away from the work that the sea has done and, to the serious collectors, devalue it.
Sea glass is often referred to as Mermaid’s Tears. The legend goes that mermaids, having great power of the seas, were forbidden to interact with humans. However, one mermaid disobeyed this to save a sailor that had fallen overboard, from his ship, during a storm. She was able to calm the seas and save him from his certain death. Her punishment was severe for this good deed. She was banished by Neptune, God of the Sea, to the bottom of the sea, never to see humans or their ships, again. The heartbroken mermaid’s tears of loneliness spread through the seas, only to arrive at our shores.
